Civil Wedding In Cyprus

The island of Cyprus is a well-known historical and touristic destination. The fantastic weather together with the ancient history and legends constitutes the island an ideal destination for all seasons. Apart from the historical patrimony and weather, Cyprus is an attractive location for weddings. Particularly, the city of Limassol is rather popular for civil weddings between foreigners. In this article, I will inform you of everything you need to know about civil weddings in Cyprus.

According to Marriage Law (Cap 279), a Mayor or any other member of the municipal council, authorised by the Mayor, may perform a wedding ceremony. Furthermore, a wedding ceremony could be performed by an individual authorised by the Minister of Interior exactly for this purpose.

Arrange a Civil Wedding: Necessary Documents

An essential requirement is that both parties should be adults of sound mind. Moreover, an absolute consent from both parties is required. Note that individuals who have turned 16 years old are allowed to get married only with their parents’ or legal guardians’ consent. A written consent is required to be presented and is made in the presence of the Mayor. In case there are no legal guardians then the consent of the Supreme Court is needed.

Below, I am listing all the necessary documents you need to submit together with your application. All the required documents must be translated into English or Greek. In this point, I would like to mention that I may arrange all the necessary bureaucratic procedures for you effectively and efficiently. The only thing you need to do is to send me the required documents.

Necessary Documents and Fees:

1. Passports

Declarations of being single (issued from the country of origin of both parties).

These declarations/certificates can be issued by the registry office/parish registry, the Ministry of Interior (Home Office) or Foreign Ministry (Foreign Office) of the countries of both parties or by Embassies. Note that all the required documents must be translated into Greek or English. UK citizens may submit an affidavit from the District Court or a lawyer. The translated documents must be duly certified and signed by the aforementioned legal persons.

2. Divorce certificates (absolute degree)

They must be issued by the Courts or the Church. The divorce certificates must be accompanied by an affidavit declaring that the two parties have not remarried.

3. Death certificate

In the case of widowhood, an original or certified copy of death certificate must be submitted.

4. Original or a certified copy of birth certificate

5. Cypriot citizens should submit a confirmation of being single/divorced issued by the Ministry of Interior in Nicosia.

In order to receive the above confirmation by the Registrar Officer, the two parties must submit a sworn declaration of being single/ divorced signed at a Court and the original divorce certificate which bears the seal that became absolute. This certificate is issued within a few days by the Registrar Officer. The payable fee for this certificate is 34.17 euro.

6. Cypriot citizens should submit a Certificate for Thalassaemia.

Fees:

  1. Weddings with notice 128.10 euro.
  2. Weddings before the lap of 15 days: 281.90 euro.

Note: The above fees may increase based on Cyprus Legislation.

Civil weddings between foreigners or foreigners with Cypriot citizens:

In this paragraph, I clarify the procedure for civil weddings between foreigners or foreigners with Cypriot citizens.

A civil wedding between two foreigners or between a foreigner and a Cypriot citizen can be done in either one of the following two ways:

  1. Present notification of wedding. In this case, the marriage cannot be held within the first 15 days from the date of notification and not later than three months from that particular date. Therefore, the interested parties should stay in Cyprus for at least 20 days.
  2. Have the marriage before the lap of 15 days. In this case, the interested parties proceed their application to the Mayor of the Municipality of their choice so that to register their marriage. A marriage following this procedure can take place within 2-3 days. For this kind of marriage, no special reason is required to be proven.
